I chose to read an article called, “Why Amazon’s Grocery Store May Not Be the Future of Retail”. I found this article on Harvard Business Review. It talks about how Amazon opened a cashier-less concept grocery store in Seattle and Amazon Go. They are unclear about how this project will end up working or if it will be successful at all. It also talks about radio-frequency identification and how using it for clothing and shoes is better than using it for grocery stores, it’s simply not worth it to spend that much on it. They talk about electronic shelf labels which have become more popular over the years because of how they make the prices and other information easier to read and display more information, these shelf labels are easy to change in real time as well. Mobile payments are also discussed as a concept that is getting more popular with the retail industry.

“The stock market was excited about Amazon Go because it signaled a promising new technology by a digital retail powerhouse that is aggressively moving into physical stores. If Amazon is right, investors are betting, the model could transform traditional retail. But it won’t happen unless the benefits to retailer and customer decisively outweigh the cost of the technology”.

With the expansion of technology these days, companies are trying to come up with new ideas to add to their stores to make things easier for their customers. Although adding more and more technology to the business world may sound like an amazing idea, there are many things that could go wrong when doing this, not to mention, the amount of money that doing things like this would cost. The biggest problem is that if the company would choose to invest in these new technologies that are talked about in this article that if they ended up not benefiting them, then they would’ve wasted money that they could’ve spent on something that would’ve benefitted their company. In the textbook, technology is talked about for example, in chapter 11 section 2 (my book is version 3.0, it has still not been switched sadly). They talk about how college students use so much technology related items, like apps for example. In the article they talked about apple pay and how some companies has made their own apps where you can purchase items before going to the store to make it easier. We have not yet talked about this chapter in class.

As for my plans for future individual assignments, I have to admit I procrastinated on this first one because of the work load I have had lately but, for the next assignments I’m going to get them done as soon as I possibly can. For the second individual assignment I am planning on finding a current upper-classmen student o interview through Linkedin. I determined that I will find and interview the person sometime within the next week so all I will have to do is arrange the interview to be posted on my blog. For the third assignment I will be doing it on an Interior Design company, seen as my major is Interior Architecture, I would like to focus on that. As for the forth assignment, I will have to go to a networking event before I can complete this, which I will do the next chance that I get. For the last assignment, I will talk about my favorite guest lecture and elaborate on why and ho their lecture effected me. Overall, for the rest of these assignments, I plan on getting them done way in advance so I don’t have to be stressed about them later, while still completing them well.
